Chirk and the Ceiriog Valley in Wrexham North Wales

Robson's Commercial Directory of North Wales - circa 1840

Chirk, a populous village, 6 miles from Oswestry, and 6 from Llangollen. This parish may justly be considered one of the prettiest in Wales; the delightful scenery which bounds it - the river Dee which runs close to it - and the aqueducts which have been made for the canal, together with the ancient seats of Chirk Castle, and of Lord Viscount Dungannon, at once present a view both beautiful and picturesque. The church contains some ancient monuments of the Myddleton family, &c. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the Bishop of St. Asaph; the Rev. George Robson is the vicar, and the Rev. N. J. Temple the curate. The Methodists have also meetings here. A school was erected in 1824, by the bounty of Lady C. Myddleton Biddulph, at whose expense it is now chiefly supported. The fairs are four in number, viz. February 10th, June 10th, August 12th, and November 12th. Magistrates' meetings are held every month. Here also a society for the relief of sick and distressed members, and an Odd Fellows Lodge - the whole of which are held at the Chirk Castle hotel.
